The artist

Chrystel Floriot

Painter, sculptor and visual artist

Biography

A native of Meudon, near Paris, Chrystel Floriot has followed an atypical path. With a dual background in law and in art history at the École du Louvre, she pursues two professions that could not be more different: a lawyer during the week, an artist the rest of the time.

First a watercolourist and pastellist, she quickly broadened her palette to other techniques, alternating figurative and abstract periods, with exhibitions in the cities where she lived.

At the end of 2004 she moved to South-East Asia (Malaysia, then Indonesia) and devoted herself entirely to painting and sculpture. This new destination proved a dream source of inspiration and a field for exploring new materials, textures and techniques.

An award won in Kuala Lumpur opened the doors of prestigious art galleries. It also marked the beginning of private and public commissions in Asia and France, auctions of her works, and unlikely exhibitions such as one inside the Galeries Lafayette in Jakarta.

Her return to France in 2020 opened a new chapter in her work: she gradually set aside traditional media and turned to textile.

Introduced to fabrics and lace in childhood by her grandmother, a seamstress, she has kept a particular sensitivity to these materials, where heritage meets modernity.

Fishnet, tulle and openwork materials became a true pictorial language that dresses and undresses her muses and landscapes, concealing them as much as it reveals them.

The guiding thread remains the same:
to surprise and to innovate.

Artistic approach

While each new geographical stop marks an evolution of her style, the guiding thread of her artistic approach remains the same: to surprise and to innovate.

To create that surprise and arrive at an original work, she works in series. Each collection is a new challenge to take on.
